Ready To Rock Again: Newark Reverses Ban On Live Music Venues

Newark, DE is about to get loud again. After nearly 30 years of silence, the City of Newark is reversing its ban on live entertainment venues. According to the Newark Post, the city is amending Chapter 32 of its zoning code to allow live entertainment businesses — including live music, comedy, and other performances — in the BB (Central Business District) and BC (General Business) zoning districts by special use permit. This ban dates back to the late 1990s, when City Council tried to crack down on binge and underage drinking. Since then, live music was effectively banned in venues that serve alcohol, with only a few grandfathered spots like Deer Park Tavern, Klondike Kate’s, and Grain Craft Bar + Kitchen still able to host bands.Gone are the days when major artists and local legends tore up the stages of the Stone Balloon Tavern and East End Cafe, but that could be changing fast.Wonderland Records owner Demitri Theodoropoulos is already planning a new downtown concert venue called Stella’s. His vision: a place where people can see local bands, and once in a while bring in some major acts. The Planning Commission first discussed this as a “Hot Topic” for economic development in March 2025, and on July 7th recommended approval of the changes. The goal is simple: promote economic development, modernize the code, and bring live entertainment back to Main Street.*What this means for the Tri-State music scene:*For original bands, music shops, venues, and fans across Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania – this is huge.
